“yamadwiteeya” “ಯಮ ದ್ವಿತೀಯ”

Yama Dwiteeya- Bhaginee hastena bhojana

When it is to be observed ?

“Yama Dwitiya” is observed on the second day of the Shukla Paksha in Kartika maasa  and is one of the celebrations during the five days of Diwali.  This is to be observed in the noon by worshipping Yamadharmaraja.
Yama Dvitiya ಯಮ ದ್ವಿತೀಯ is associated with Lord Yama Dharmaraja, the god of Death, visiting his sister Yamuna and is a symbol of love between brothers and sisters.

Whom to be worshipped ?

On that day, one has to do the pooja of  Yama, Chitragupta and other servants of Yamadharmaraja.   Ofcourse, we have to do  the anusandhana of tadantargatha Bharateeramana mukhya praanantargatha Sri Lakshmi Narasimhayanamaha.  We have to give argya to Yamadharmaraja.

If we do some pooja for their brothers, they will have dheerghayassu and the sister will have soubhagya.

On this day, brothers shall have meals in the sister’s house invariably.  That is the blessings by Yamuna when he ate in his sister’s house.  On that day the svagruha bhojana is nishiddha.

If there is no sister, he can go to his friends’ sister’s house or can go to his sodaratte (mother-in law) house.  On Yamadwiteeya day the brothers have to give Nuthana vastra, abharana, to his sisters.

When his younger sister is offering bhojana to the brothers, she has to chant the following shloka –

bhraatastavaanujaataahaM bhuMkShva bhakShyamidaM shubhaM |

Any story behind Yama dwiteeya? –

Once, Yamadharma, the Narakalokadhipathi,  visited his sister, Yamuna, on the second day of the Shukla Paksha in Kartika maasa after Diwali.  Yamuna welcomed her brother by applying the auspicious tilaka on his forehead. Then the brother and sister exchanged gifts. Yamuna also served Yamadharmaraja with his favorite dishes.  Yama who was overwhelmed by the love of his sister is believed to have said to Yamuna that who receives Tilak from his sister will have to never suffer hell.  Since then “Yama Dwitiya” is observed as a symbol of love and affection between brothers and sisters.
